• About AAMFT

    The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) is the professional association for the field of marriage and family therapy. We represent the professional interests of more than 72,000 marriage and family therapists throughout the United States, Canada and abroad.

  • Student Membership

    Student membership is open to students who are currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution for a bachelor's or master's degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy or related mental health field.

  • Professional Membership

    Eligibility for Professional membership requires you to meet at least one of the following criteria:

    Fully licensed or practicing independently as a Systemic Family Therapist or MFT or in a related mental health field

    Have graduated with a degree that allows you to work on requirements towards full licensure or independent practice of MFT or related mental health field

    Meet the basic requirements to pursue the Clinical Fellow Designation

NY Licensing Guidelines

A master's or doctoral degree in marriage and family therapy or a related topic with equivalent coursework, from a program accredited by COAMFTE or approved by the New York Education Department. 

  • Passed the exam approved by the board.

  • Completion of supervised post-degree work experience as an MFT.

    • A minimum of 1,500 client contact hours,

    • Must be supervised under a board-approved supervisor. 

    • One hour a week, or four hours a month must be in-person individual or group supervision. 

    • This experience must be completed while under a limited permit.

  • A limited permit is available to an individual that has completed all requirements except examination and/or post-degree supervised clinical experience. 

    • This license is valid for two years, but may be extended for up to two additional one-year periods.

As an LMFT in New York State, my scope of practice includes:

Assessing, evaluating, and treating individuals, couples, and families to achieve more adequate, satisfying, and productive marriage and family adjustments.

Utilizing psychotherapeutic and counseling techniques to address cognitive, affective, and behavioral issues within the context of marriage and family systems..
