NEw york Licensing Hours

To meet the experience requirement for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist, we must complete at least 1,500 client contact hours in the practice of Marriage and Family Therapy. The experience may only be completed under a limited permit issued by the Department or as part of the licensure qualifying education program, for experience in New York; experience completed in other jurisdictions must be completed legally in accordance with the laws of the jurisdiction.
The supervisor must provide at least one hour per week or four hours per month of in-person individual or group supervision where the supervisor:
  • reviews supervisees assessment, evaluation and treatment of each client under his or her general supervision; and
  • provides oversight, guidance and direction to supervisee in developing skills as a Marriage and Family Therapist.

School Requirements

The clinical hour requirement to graduate is 500 total hours with 250 being relational. Only client contact in therapy sessions counts for these hours. 
It is required to have a minimum of 100 hours of supervision. 50 of these will need to include raw session data – audio, video or live. Supervision must remain in a 1 to 5 ratio with therapy for the therapy hours to count. Note that clinical hours are completed in New York.
